The Site of L.M. Montgomery’s Cavendish Home

– A Short 10 minute walk from Cavendish Bosom Buddies Cottages

It is and ever must be hallowed ground to me’ so said L.M. Montgomery of her Cavendish home. She came here to live with her maternal grandparents, Alexander and Lucy MacNeill when her mother Clara MacNeill Montgomery died. This was her home from 1876-1911. She loved her home, and although no buildings remain, the homestead fields which surround it are there, as are the lanes she walked, the gardens she tended, and the old trees she sat under to dream and write. Serene and beautiful this site captures the essence of the Cavendish she knew and loved. It was here she wrote Anne of Green Gables. John MacNeill, a great grandson of Alexander, lives on this land, and he and his wife carefully tend their piece of heritage. They are available to visitors to explain the site and recount the history of the author’s life lived here. Open from May 15th to October 15th.
